  16. <p>A mod creed for Presbyterians
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     When the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was formed in 1983,
  19. ending a Civil War-era schism, one of the first tasks was to
  20. set forth its beliefs. That effort, complicated by the church's
  21. theological diversity, bore fruit last week as a national
  22. assembly of the 2.9 million-member denomination gave
  23. overwhelming approval to an 80-line "Brief Statement of Faith."
  24. After endorsement from regional units, it will join the ten
  25. other doctrinal statements that guide Presbyterians. The
  26. cleverly crafted text seems traditional enough to prevent the
  27. conservative opposition that killed a modernized creed in the
  28. Southern branch 14 years ago. Liberals, meanwhile, will be
  29. cheered by the heavy emphasis on the Social Gospel, including
  30. ecological concerns.

  32. <p>     Feminists may grimace to hear God twice addressed as
  33. "Father," but they will be pleased that the Deity is described
  34. as being "like a mother who will not forsake her nursing
  35. child." Moreover, belief that the Holy Spirit "calls women and
  36. men to all ministries of the church" is for the first time
  37. elevated to creedal status alongside such fundamental matters
  38. as the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And the soothing assertion
  39. that the Holy Spirit "sets us free to accept ourselves" is more
  40. akin to pop psychology than to the stern confessions of yore.
